The hippocampus, a small yet crucial part of the brain, plays a pivotal role in our ability to learn and remember. Named after its seahorse-like shape, the hippocampus is located within the temporal lobes of the brain and is a key component of the limbic system, which is involved in regulating emotions and forming memories.

Structure and Location

The hippocampus is nestled deep within the brain’s medial temporal lobe, with one hippocampus on each side of the brain. This bilateral structure is composed of two main parts: the hippocampus proper (also known as Ammon’s horn) and the dentate gyrus1. These regions are interconnected and work together to process and store different types of memories.

Functions of the Hippocampus

The hippocampus is primarily known for its role in memory formation. It is essential for converting short-term memories into long-term ones, a process known as memory consolidation2. This function is crucial for learning new information and retaining it over time. Additionally, the hippocampus is involved in spatial memory, which helps us navigate and understand our environment.

  1. Memory Formation: The hippocampus helps encode new experiences and information, transforming them into lasting memories. This process involves the organization, storage, and retrieval of memories, allowing us to recall past events and learn from them.

  3. Emotional Regulation: Working closely with the amygdala, the hippocampus helps link memories with emotions. This connection allows us to remember not just the facts of an event, but also the feelings associated with it, which can influence our future behavior and decision-making.

Impact of Damage to the Hippocampus

Damage to the hippocampus can have profound effects on memory and cognitive function. Conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, hypoxia (lack of oxygen), and traumatic brain injury can impair the hippocampus, leading to memory loss and difficulties in forming new memories2. Individuals with severe hippocampal damage may experience anterograde amnesia, the inability to create new memories, while still retaining older memories.
